Frequently Asked Questions
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government initiative that is governed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). It gives disabled individuals more choice and control over the methods of care they receive, empowering them to live on their own and enhancing their overall quality of life.
What types of supports are covered by the NDIS?
The NDIS funds support based on what is considered reasonable and necessary for each individual. The type of assistance provided depends on your individual needs, goals and circumstances.
What is the NDIA and what is its role?
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is the government agency responsible for implementing the NDIS. The core function of this is to ensure that all the eligible participants get the appropriate funding and support to meet their needs.
Who is eligible for the NDIS?
The eligibility varies on multiple factors such as age, location, and the type of disability.
Who is an NDIS planner, and how can they assist me?
They are professionals appointed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) who assist participants in developing and managing their NDIS plans. They work with individuals to set their goals. If you are not comfortable with your assigned planner, you have the right to request a different planner.
How can NDIS funds be managed?
There are three ways in which NDIS participants can manage their funds:
  • Agency-Managed: Payments to service providers are managed directly by the NDIA.
  • Plan-Managed: A registered plan manager oversees the financial aspects of the plan.
  • Self-Managed: Participants take full control of their funding and pay for services themselves.
Depending on individual preferences, you can use a combination of these choices as well.
Does the NDIS cover transport costs?
Transport funding through the NDIS may be available if a disability makes it unsafe or impossible for a person to use public transport. Funding is granted based on individual needs and may consider existing government transport support. However, the NDIS does not reimburse transport assistance for carers.
Who can assist with NDIS plan implementation?
If additional support is needed to implement a plan, the NDIS may refer participants to a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or provide Support Coordination funding. There are 3 different levels of Support Coordination:
  • Support Connection – Simple help finding services, making arrangements.
  • Coordination of Supports – Assists with managing multiple services and providers.
  • Specialist Support Coordination – For people with complex needs who require specialist level of coordination.
What is the NDIS Code of Conduct?
The NDIS Code of Conduct sets the ethical and legal expectations that all NDIS workers and providers must meet. It requires individuals with disabilities to be provided with safe, respectful and high quality services.
